The State of Origin is billed as one of sport’s greatest rivalries, Australia’s rugby league answer to Michigan vs Ohio State in college football, Giants vs Dodgers in baseball, Liverpool vs Manchester United in proper football and India vs Pakistan in cricket. The Queensland Maroons take on the New South Wales Blues every year and both teams put their bodies on the line in a best-of-three series for glory, honour and the coveted Origin shield.
Playing for clubs comes down to money, but State of Origin is about unwavering loyalty for the state in which your rugby league career was born. Prior to 1980, players for interstate matches were eligible if they were playing club rugby in that state, regardless of their roots. Now, players can only be selected to play for the state in which they played their first senior rugby league match, ensuring that passions run deep. This fortuitous change of rules has seen the State of Origin series grow into the fixture it is today.
The love of Origin goes beyond the states represented. All of Australia picks a side, and much of New Zealand does too. All over the rugby-playing world, lovers of league will sit up and pay attention to the series as it showcases some of the highest standard and fiercest competition in the sport worldwide. It also captures the imagination of many sport fans from all codes, harking back to the days when you played for the place in which you were born rather than the club which was willing to pay you the highest salary.
The three matches are played over the course of six weeks, and usually take place in Sydney’s ANZ Stadium or Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium- with the Melbourne Cricket Ground hosting match two in 2015. This is a wide spread, and a car rental from one of Australia’s major east-coast cities is the best way for die-hard fans to get their fill of origin matches and see a little bit of the country along the way. Airport Rentals can get you set up with the perfect rental vehicle at a great price, so you can afford a jersey to wear to the game. Blue or Maroon?
Pick up your car in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne and you are on the fast track to some quality rugby league. Tickets sell out fast- but even if you miss out, there’s nothing quite like a bar in Sydney or Brisbane on Origin night.
Brisbane is our pick-up point of choice for the wintertime State of Origin series. The Queensland city stays warm all year, so you can enjoy a side of subtropical sunshine with your Origin viewing. The city has an international airport and a huge selection of rental suppliers, and the laidback atmosphere of the city makes it easy to get around under your own steam. A Brisbane car rental is a great way to experience Australia’s biggest sporting rivalry!
