An absolute must-see, The Coromandel is one of the most popular getaway destinations in the country. Packed with numerous seaside towns and secluded beaches - it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind. 

A short 2-3 hour drive from Auckland, you’ll find sprawling native rainforests and home to the popular Pinnacles trek. Whether you’re tackling the surf at Whangamata or getting that perfect Instagram shot at Cathedral Cove, there’s no shortage of beaches to explore.

Cathedral Cove

Visit Cathedral Cove to have picnic under the shade of Pohutukawa trees

A place where bringing your camera is more important than bringing a towel, Cathedral Cove is an annual pilgrimage for many during the Christmas and New Year period. Turn up early and find a spot at the Grange Road carpark, or loop back to the larger carpark and catch the bus for a small fee. A walking track leads you down to the beach where you’ll find the perfect picnic spot under the shade of Pohutukawa trees.

Coromandel Town

Coromandel Town boasts rich history of gold mining and logging.

Packed with a rich history of gold mining and logging is Coromandel Town. Galleries and craft shops showcase the local talent of many local residents that call this place home. Discover a range of restored Victorian-era buildings, the mining museum and even a mountain railway.

For those eager to explore the local flora - a track of 309 Road leads you down to a popular swimming hole nestled in the native forest. Alternatively try the Kauri Block Walk which takes you to an old Maori pa with 360 degree views across the Coromandel Ranges. 

Hahei

Hahei Beach perfect for a dip in the sea - Travel Tips

An absolute favourite with the locals, Hahei is a popular beach perfect for a dip in the sea. The nearby offshore islands offer great diving, snorkelling and kayaking opportunities with plenty of caves and archways - make sure you check out the blowhole! Head to the local dairy for an ice cream and relax in the Coromandel sun.

Hot Water Beach

Dig out that spade or shovel from the garage, you’ll want it here. Naturally heated water flows to the surface of the beach, and with your shovel you can create your own personal spa pool. Looking for somewhere a bit more secluded? Head along to the east of the beach with a novel or for that mid-afternoon nap.

Paeroa

Paeroa the historic town has great access to the Karangahake Gorge.

Made famous by Lemon & Paeroa, this historic town is a popular photo spot and has great access to the Karangahake Gorge. Riddled with mining tunnels and walkways, this captivating area features the Windows Walkway with incredible views of the Waitewheta river.

There is no shortage of walks, and the Gorge features the Tunnel Loop Walk, the Historic Walkway and Owahara Falls.

Tairua

Try the Tairua Harbour and make your way across to the nearby Pauanui beach

A popular town to pass through on any Coromandel adventure is Tairua. Stuck in traffic waiting for the one way bridge? Park on up and explore what this town has to offer. A range of walks are available from easy 10 minute strolls to climbing the summit of Mount Paku or bring a torch and try the 3 hour hike through a local mine. 

Head to the beach for surfing, body boarding or relaxation in the sun. If you’re looking to go sailing, windsurfing or kayaking, try the Tairua Harbour and make your way across to the nearby Pauanui beach. 

Whangamata

Catch waves or bathe in the sun in Whangamata the surfing town.

Especially popular during the summer months, this surfing town is everything you’d expect it to be. A four kilometre long beach offers the opportunity to catch waves or bathe in the sun.

If you’re looking for an activity, there are two golf courses or you can try a local charter for diving or game fishing. 

Looking for something else? Kayak out to Hauturu Island or head to the Coromandel Forest Park for a mix of hiking, biking and hunting - just make sure you check out the walk to Wentworth Falls.

If you find Whangamata a bit overwhelming, take a short drive north to Onemana Beach. Home to native Dotterels, you’ll find good surf and some neat walking tracks.
