As the mornings start to get a bit chillier and the end of daylight savings draws closer, we all need something to look forward to. Those summer holidays are starting to become a distant memory so the only solution is to get that next holiday booked as soon as possible. Lucky Easter is just round the corner - the perfect excuse to get away for a few days and make the most of those last heady weekends before winter sets in.

Here are some ideas to get you planning:

Road Trip

Why not jump in the car with the family or a group of friends and hit the road? The Auckland, Hamilton, Taupo route is always fun. Stop at the world famous Hamilton Gardens (they really are amazing) and indulge in some riverside dining while it’s still warm enough to eat outside in the evening. In Taupo there are endless ways to have fun - from jet boating, to walking to hot pools to sailing on the lake, to trout fishing.  What about heading down the  east coast of the South Island - it doesn't get much more picturesque than the journey from Picton to Christchurch through beautiful Kaikoura.

Explore a National Park

Why not take the long weekend to explore one of our amazing National Parks? Walk the Tongariro crossing, explore Mount Taranaki and surrounds, Kayak Abel Tasman or stand slack-jawed at the dramatic beauty that is Fiordland. There’s a reason that people come from all over the world to see these stunning sights.

Tick something of the bucket list

If there’s something in New Zealand you’ve always wanted to do, now’s the time to tick it off your list, when there aren’t crowds of overseas tourist. The glittery walls of Waitomo caves, the cute hillside doors of Hobbiton, Pohutu Geyser in all it’s steamy shooting madness, Te Papa, soaking in Hanmer Springs, the geological wonder that is Punakaiki, exploring Queenstown, Larnarch Castle. Get booking for that Easter break.

With four days off, the possibilities are endless - hit up a beachside town for some long walks and maybe even one last dip? Head to one of our foodie capitals like Hawke’s Bay or Wellington, explore the wild beauty of the deep South. Head to the winterless North for some fascinating history and good times on the water. Summer may be over but there’s still plenty of fun to be had on an Easter getaway.
