Labour weekend is nearly upon us - how did that happen? Time to plan an exciting mini break to blow out the cobwebs after all this time at home. Here are some fly-and-drive ideas to inspire you for your long weekend away.

  • Fly into New Plymouth and do a circuit of the Taranaki region. Get your art and foodie fix in New Plymouth itself, take in those iconic mountain views (if you’re feeling energetic it’s definitely worth a hike up the side to Wilkies Pools and Dawson Falls) soak up those beach vibes with a drive up Surf Highway 45 and take plenty of walks along the waterfront for that wild west coastal beauty.

  • Fly into Christchurch and drive to Akaroa in Banks Peninsula for a gorgeous seaside weekend - crazy mosaic art at The Giants House - it has to be seen to be believed; Hector’s dolphins in the harbour; one of the country’s best located cooking schools right at the water's edge and lots of stunning seaside strolls.
  • Fly into Auckland and head north. Matakana is great for foodies - make sure you go early to catch the markets - and further on Waipu, Langs Beach, Mangawhai (don’t miss divine Bennett’s chocolates), are perfect if you’re looking for some coastal downtime with plenty of white sand expanses and wonderful waves. Horsey types should definitely take a trot along the white sands of Uretiti Beach.

  • Fly into Nelson and drive just half an hour out of town to Upper Moutere where you’ll find the country’s oldest pub, excellent wineries, wonderful art and so many other clever artisans. It’s a great place for getting around on bikes or e-bikes, just make sure it’s one with a basket for purchases!
  • Fly into Hamilton and drive an hour to Waitomo for caving shenanigans. There’s everything from a gentle boat ride in the original cave or an easy bushwalk, to more adventurous activities like black water rafting or ziplining underground. The area is truly a geological wonderland.

  • Fly into Dunedin and drive half an hour towards the Karitane Peninsula and beyond. Walk the stunning peninsula itself, have lunch at Port Chalmers, explore the site of the former Seacliff Asylum (of Janet Frame fame) take a long stroll up magical Doctors Point, and finish your day with a beer and food truck fare from Arc Brewery. It’s a truly beautiful part of the country.
