The Frankincense Trail is an ancient trade route stretching 2000 miles across Arabia. The trail starts out in Oman near Salalah, so makes for an interesting drive out of the city. Frankincense trees only grow in a few countries (Oman, Somalia and Yemen) as they thrive in desert-woodland areas. The resin of the trees has been used in medicine, religion and even perfumes for hundreds of years, and you’ll find plenty of souvenirs of this substance in the city as well. Be sure to watch the BBC documentary on the trail before you set off for a little inspiration!
Another historic spot is the Sumhuram Old City, a collection of ruins set in a picturesque spot between the coast and the hills. Details of its past are conflicting, but you can check out the stories at a small free museum on site - it’s recommended to visit this first so that you have a greater understanding as you visit the ruins themselves. Remember that the area can get exceptionally hot at midday and in the early afternoon, so either visit early, or later for a gorgeous sunset amongst the old limestone walls.
If you find the heat of the city a little too hot to handle, spend some time at the Al Mugsayl Beach, a stretch of beautiful white sands that is usually very quiet. Climb to the top of the cliff to see the blowholes, where seawater shoots 30 metres into the air from limestone caves for a truly unforgettable sight.
Salalah Airport is a brand new facility, only receiving its first commercial flight in April 2015 after a major expansion. Once you’ve picked up your car hire from Salalah Airport, the town is just five kilometres away, which should take you no more than 15 minutes to drive.
From Salalah, Aden and Sana'a can be reached after two days spent on the roads. Alternatively, you can go North straight to the beautiful desert of Saudi Arabia or follow the coast of Oman to the capital city, Muscat.
