General Rental Information
The renter and the driver have to be in possession of a valid driving license.
If the renter or driver has been in Costa Rica for longer than 3 months, he needs to present a driving license issued in Costa Rica.
Driving licenses printed with non Roman alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic etc) must be complemented by an International driving license.
Please show your valid ID card or passport and driver license at time of pick up.
Special rental information by booking of Prepaid rates
A booking can be changed up to 48 hours before the start of the rental (on availability) in return for an alteration charge of 27.00 USD. Any payment already made towards the rental will not be refunded; nor shall any differential amount be refunded if this alteration leads to a lesser rental cost.
(Rebooking = RF)
A booking can be cancelled before the rental begins. In the event of cancellation, the payment in advance already made towards the rental shall be paid back subject to a cancellation charge, which will be withheld and shall be in the amount of the rental charge (including any extras and charges) for a maximum of 3 rental days. Cancellations can be made online or in writing and must be addressed to: Sixt Costa Rica Headquarters, Motorescostaricapuntocom, S. In the event that the booked vehicle is not collected or not collected at the agreed time the rental charge already paid shall be withheld in full.
Minimum age in Costa Rica is 18.
Driver has to be in possession of a valid driving license for at least 1 year.
A Young Driver Surcharge of 5.00 USD per day applies for drivers under 21 years.

Apart from this, the following restrictions for minimum age and possession of a valid driving licence are valid:
25 years/5 years for vehicles in groups FDAR, XDAR
Maximum age in Costa Rica is 75.
Conditions of Payment
All major international credit cards - such as American Express, Diners Club, Discover, Mastercard and Visa - are accepted.
We do not accept any prepaid cards or debit cards (Visa Electron).
Cash Payment (in local currency or US Dollars) and traveller's checks are accepted. However, please note that a credit card for guarantee purposes must be presented on collection of the vehicle.
Sixt CarExpress Service Cards are only accepted in combination with a valid credit card.
The following credit cards are accepted: all major international credit cards - such as American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard and Visa. We do not accept any prepaid cards or debit cards (Visa Electron).
The renter must be the owner of the indicated credit card. The authorized driver details and method of payment will be confirmed at reservation stage and cannot be amended. The confirmed credit card should be valid and available for presentation on collection of the vehicle. All extra costs that occur during the car rental will be charged to this credit card.
By booking of a prepaid rate, the credit card will be charged before the start of rental, directly with the estimated total amount of rental. The amount that will be charged on your credit card comprises the price of rental as well as all additional extra fees.
The rental charge(plus any other charges agreed such as, e.g. exemptions from liability, delivery charges, airport charges etc.) plus value added tax in the statutory amount applicable from time to time must, as a matter of principle, be paid in full for the agreed rental period, i.e. if the vehicle is collected late or returned early there shall be no refund.
An advance charge approval is obtained for the chosen means of payment as a security deposit. The exact deposit is determined on collection since the amount is dependent on the vehicle and the rental length. Cash deposits are not accepted.
Please be aware that security deposits are only accepted with valid credit cards, if needed, with the PIN.
General Protection and Waiver Program Conditions
None of the below mentioned protections includes a road assistance service. All transfer costs of any damaged rented vehicle as a result of an accident or driver behavior have to be assumed by the renter.
Third Party Liability (TI)
Rates do include Third Party Liability.
Protection coverage for the vehicle rented includes Third Party Liability with a maximum cover of 1,000,000 USD per event for Third party injuries and liabilities.
The customer is only responsible for the following amounts: 300.00 USD.
Excluded from the protection is the use of the vehicle for the transport of dangerous goods. Coverage does not apply if driving through rivers, on beach or in contact with salt water. All protection cover as part of the rental contract will become void, in particular, if an unauthorized driver has used the vehicle or if the driver of the vehicle does not possess the required driver's license at the time of the event giving rise to claim.
Liability Insurance (TI) does not cover all situations that may arise while operating a -rental vehicle-. TI does not cover all risks. There may be exclusions for unauthorized or intoxicated drivers,no first party uninsured motorist coverage, no coverage for certain passengers in the vehicle and other exclusions as stated in the protection policy.

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)
Loss Damage Waiver removes the drivers responsibility to a part of the vehicle in case of damage or theft:
800.00 USD: MCMR, ECMR, CCAR.
1,000.00 USD: EFMR, CFMR, IFMR, IFAR, IDAR.
1,500.00 USD: FFMR, FFAR, PFMR, PFAR.
2,500.00 USD: FDAR, XDAR.
LDW waiver is mandatory in Costa Rica, but can be declined if the customer uses his credit card car rental protection.
(Only possible with American Express, Master Card or Visa and never possible to decline our LDW by renting a FDAR or XDAR.)
With this act, the customer declares that fully understood the details of the car rental insurance program from his credit card and that he is aware that it covers the type of car rented in Costa Rica.
If LDW is not accepted the customer will be held liable for the full value of the car.

Excluded from the coverage are damages on tyres and rims.
Excluded from the protection is driving through rivers, on beach or the contact with salt water.

Top Cover LDW
If LDW is already included in the rates, the renter can choose Top Cover LDW to eliminate the Non-Waiverable Responsibility.

Vandalism and Accessories Coverage (VAC)
The Vandalism Protection provides cover against the consequences of damages due to vandalism on windshield, door lock, radio, CD player, antenna, and punctured tires.
Personal belongings are not covered with the vandalism protection.
In case of a damage a police report is required to validate the Vandalism Protection.
The cost of VAC is 3.95 USD per day with no excess.

All vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel and should be refilled prior to return to Sixt, otherwise a charge of 1.60 USD per litre of petrol or 1.40 USD per litre of diesel will apply.
Alternatively, you may purchase a tankful of fuel at the time of rental at a price that is competitive with local fuel stations and return the tank empty. No refunds will be given for unused fuel.

Other Fees and Taxes
Loss of car keys, license plate or car documents
A Lost of Key Fee of 150.00 USD applies.
Loss of the license plate Fee will apply of 150.00 USD.
Loss of the car documents Fee will apply of 50.00 USD.
The car key delivery fee depends on the distance calculated from the Sixt Headquarters in Costa Rica.
No VAT applies.
All rates include tax/VAT (if incurred).

The rates on this website are often heavily discounted. This is due to our negotiated rates and bulk buying power. On very rare occasions, a rate may be displayed incorrectly due to our, or a vehicle supplier's error. In such a case, if you book with us at a quoted rate that is incorrect, we will notify you of any price change and give you the option to proceed or cancel. We make every effort to keep information on our site up to date, but we cannot guarantee this website is free of errors or omissions and retain the right to update or change the information published at any time.

When you pick up your vehicle, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the supplier of the vehicle. Your rental and use of the vehicle will be governed by the terms of the rental agreement and any other documentation or information provided to you by the supplier at the time you pick up your vehicle. The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier's rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.
While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. We welcome feedback from our customers on their experience with our suppliers. We may, at our discretion, provide you with reasonable assistance in resolving any dispute you may have with a supplier.
Our total liability to you in relation to your use of this website and the information contained on this website will not exceed the dollar amount of the deposit we have received from you in relation to your booking/rental. Refunds will not be made for bookings cancelled due to inclement weather. Again, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance. Your use of this website is governed by the laws of New Zealand and the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
To make a booking you must complete our booking form which is easy to follow and secured with the latest encryption technology. Once we receive your form, we will, subject to availability, confirm your booking by emailing you a confirmation voucher and invoice.
If you are booking via phone, please make sure you have read the terms and conditions of the vehicle you wish to rent first. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.
Vehicle capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A vehicle supplier can refuse to rent a vehicle to any person who is in their opinion unfit to drive or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
In the event of cancellation, any deposit amounts paid at the time of booking are non-refundable.
If you are unsatisfied with our service, please contact us within 48 hours of placing your booking or request and we will work to resolve any issues and determine if compensation is due. In the event you have completed your rental and are unhappy with your vehicle, we are happy to assist you in seeking compensation from the operator of the vehicle.
